Evening Express Aberdeen’s Champion Awards

The Evening Express Aberdeen’s Champion 2020 Awards in association with  Balmoral Group and Original 106FM aim to recognise the people in our communities who make the north-east a fantastic place to live and work.

As a newspaper, we hear stories of individuals, groups, businesses, neighbours, key workers and youngsters across the region, who are helping people around them through what is a difficult time.

We want to recognise and reward these selfless souls who are doing their bit to help others in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire.

The event is now over and we hope you had a fabulous evening celebrating. Congratulations to all our finalists and winners and thank you to our amazing sponsors.

Business Breakfast – June 24

ESG and the climate-positive city

VIRTUAL EVENT – THURSDAY, JULY 01, 2021, 8AM – 9AM

FREE REGISTRATION

Environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles of investment are not just a boxticking exercise, they are reshaping the fabric of our society and the north-east of Scotland is at the forefront of this.

Join us for insights and advice as we discuss how ESG investment is supporting transformational change, particularly in our production and consumption of energy. As well the panellists will consider whether this investment be sufficient to support a fair transition as the region’s economy shifts from its reliance on hydrocarbons to newer, cleaner forms of energy.

  • David Rennie, Head of Partnerships, Scottish Enterprise

David Rennie has worked for Scottish Enterprise for almost ten years and has recently taken on a new head of partnerships role focused on Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire.  This role has a focus on working with key partners on matters such as the City Region Deal; helping to develop and deliver key strategic projects for the area and ensuring that our relationships with key partners in the public and private sector are strong and productive.  Previously David was head of oil and gas at Scottish Enterprise and the energy sector will continue to be an important part of his new responsibilities. This change in role emphasises the national economic agency’s commitment to place and regional economic development.

Previously, his role as head of oil and gas included developing our approach to supporting the subsea industry in Scotland, through the Subsea Action Plan, also in areas such as decommissioning as well as engaging with key companies and stakeholders in the sector.  As part of this work he also sits on the board of Subsea UK, the Technology Leadership Board (TLB) and the Oil and Gas Innovation Centre (OGIC).  He was also a member of the Scottish Government Energy Jobs Task Force which ran from 2015 to 2017. Born and raised in Aberdeenshire, he is passionate about sport (Aberdeen FC), music and friends and family – not necessarily in that order.

EDEN DUNDEE: GROWING A CLIMATE POSITIVE ECONOMY

Thanks to everyone who attended The Courier Business Conference. I’m sure you will all agree that it was a very engaging and insightful event and our speakers did a sterling job on stage.

Thanks to long-term partners Henderson Loggie, our session sponsors Barnetts Toyota and McLaughlin & Harvey and our event partner Invest in Dundee.

Thanks also to our exhibitors and to you, our guests for joining us.

In the words of our keynote speaker PY Gerbeau, go forth and be “bold and brave” and embrace the opportunities brought about by the exciting development of Eden Dundee.

Take a look at our highlights video and we very much look forward to welcoming you to our next Courier event.

Keynote Speaker

  • Pierre-Yves Gerbeau

With one of the most varied business careers around, PY Gerbeau has a track record of taking on big corporate challenges and turning around struggling organisations, often under intense public scrutiny and stakeholder pressure. His businesses have always placed customers at their centre, whilst also addressing profit, reputation, and frequently issues such as regulation, planning and government involvement. As well as practical, cultural and leadership challenges, many of PY’s projects have been highly visible, subject to intense media and public scrutiny, even extending to a sense that some people were willing them to fail.

"My main takeaway from this event is we need to think big, be bold. We heard from a number of inspirational speakers at this event and hopefully that has inspired business owners and leaders to take that advice on, and create something bigger for Dundee.”

Business Incremental Inches and Incredible Impact

This event was held on June 11 for a morning of breakfast networking and panel discussion.

Sir Clive Woodward was responsible for the England rugby team’s greatest turnaround and one its most significant triumphs to date. The self-confessed rugby newbie didn’t turn the team’s fortunes around by ripping up the playbook and starting again.

Instead, he implemented a series of incremental inches – which may have seemed insignificant – but together they paved a powerful road to victory.

The same methods have been applied in business. This latest instalment of the Press and Journal Business Briefings, in association with Kelvin TOP-SET, will examine the inches up for grabs for today’s firms. From oil and gas to sport, the diversity of the panel is underpinned by a drive for better business.

The event will be held at the Marcliffe hotel and spa on June 11.

Panellists include Bob Keiller, Chairman of Scottish Enterprise, Professor Gary McEwan, Chief Executive of Elevator, Jeanette Forbes, CEO of PL Group, Duncan Fraser, Chief Executive of Aberdeen Football Club and David Ramsay, Group Director of Kelvin TOP-SET.

Tickets cost £25 plus VAT.
