Hosted by the Press & Journal the event saw economic experts Debapratim De, senior economist at Deloitte, David Rennie, head of partnerships at Scottish Enterprise and Prof. Graeme Roy, Head of Economics, Fraser of Allander Institute (FAI) provide advice and insight into how to better prepare for the UK’s divorce from the EU and what we might expect to see happen to our businesses and indeed the economy in the future.

Chair
Paul Macaulay, Partner, Turcan Connell
As a graduate of the University of Aberdeen, Paul joined Turcan Connell in 2005 and specialises in the areas of trusts, asset protection and succession planning. He advises private clients, family businesses and landowners on a broad range of issues including capital taxation and estate planning, asset protection, trust and succession law, with a particular focus on inheritance tax and capital gains tax planning for individuals and trusts. Paul is a Notary Public, a member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP), and has gained the STEP Advanced Certificate in Family Business Advising.

Debapratim De, Senior Economist, Deloitte
Debapratim De (Debo) is an economist at Deloitte. He advises clients on macroeconomic developments in the UK and other advanced economies, and is an author of the Deloitte CFO Survey. Prior to joining Deloitte, Debo was a researcher in cryptography and applied mathematics at Microsoft. He was educated at BITS, Pilani in India and at the London School of Economics.
David Rennie, Head of Partnerships, Scottish Enterprise
David Rennie has worked for Scottish Enterprise for almost ten years and has recently taken on a new head of partnerships role focused on Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire. This role has a focus on working with key partners on matters such as the City Region Deal; helping to develop and deliver key strategic projects for the area and ensuring that our relationships with key partners in the public and private sector are strong and productive. Previously David was head of oil and gas at Scottish Enterprise and the energy sector will continue to be an important part of his new responsibilities. This change in role emphasises the national economic agency’s commitment to place and regional economic development.
Previously, his role as head of oil and gas included developing our approach to supporting the subsea industry in Scotland, through the Subsea Action Plan, also in areas such as decommissioning as well as engaging with key companies and stakeholders in the sector. As part of this work he also sits on the board of Subsea UK, the Technology Leadership Board (TLB) and the Oil and Gas Innovation Centre (OGIC). He was also a member of the Scottish Government Energy Jobs Task Force which ran from 2015 to 2017. Previously through the Scottish Oil and Gas Industry Leadership Board, he was the main author of a strategy document for the Oil and Gas industry in 2014, which reflected its importance to Scotland.
Prior to working at Scottish Enterprise David Rennie worked as an economist for Scottish Government, Welsh Development Agency and he has also held key roles in the private sector. Born and raised in Aberdeenshire, he is passionate about sport (Aberdeen FC), music and friends and family – not necessarily in that order.
Professor Graeme Roy, Head of Economics, Fraser of Allander Institute
Professor Graeme Roy is Head of Economics and Director of the Fraser of Allander Institute (FAI) at the University of Strathclyde. For over 40 years, the FAI has been a leading independent research institute focused on the Scottish economy. Alongside its academic work, the FAI undertakes a wide variety of commissioned analysis for companies, organisations and governments ranging from strategy or forecasting work through to detailed economic impact assessments.
Graeme is a former Senior Civil Servant in the Scottish Government where he was both a Senior Economic Adviser and Head of the First Minister’s Policy Unit. He is a graduate of the Universities of Glasgow and Edinburgh. He is a member of the UK Government’s Scottish Business Taskforce, the Scottish Government’s Labour Market Strategy Group and the Glasgow Growth Commission. He was expert adviser to the Scottish Parliament’s Economy, Jobs and Fair Work Committee for its inquiries into economic statistics in Scotland and Scotland’s long-term economic performance.
